There’s a wide range of online information and tools available to help you get the answers and information you need for your Self Assessment tax return and payments.
Using HMRC’s online services are usually much quicker, easier and cheaper than calling us.

Ask for help online
Use HMRC’s digital assistant if you need to ask further questions about Self Assessment or have a specific query. You can also ask to chat with an adviser, if one is available.
You can also ask questions using:
- HMRC’s Self Assessment community forum — post any questions you have, get an answer and read similar posts that already have a reply
- HMRC Customer Support on X (Twitter) — for general questions about Self Assessment (do not include your personal or financial information in your post)
Use HMRC online services
Use your HMRC online account to sign in to your Personal Tax Account to check your records and manage your details.
You’ll need your Government Gateway user ID and password to sign in. If you do not have a user ID, you’ll be able to create one when you sign in for the first time.

Get the HMRC app
You can download the HMRC app onto a mobile device (for example, your phone or tablet) and use it to:
- check how much Self Assessment tax you owe
- make a payment
- set a reminder to make a Self Assessment payment
- find your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for Self Assessment
- update your postal address
- choose to be contacted by HMRC electronically, instead of by letter
- track forms and letters you have sent to us
- claim refunds
